At The Single Parent That Could, the Safe Steps Transitional Housing Program provides safe, temporary housing for single parents who are unable to secure immediate, stable housing due to financial hardship, housing barriers, or sudden life transitions.
This program is designed to fill the gap between crisis and long-term independence, offering families not only a safe place to stay, but the education, support, and guidance needed to move forward with confidence. When appropriate, participants are also supported on a pathway toward first-time homeownership. The program currently serves Texas residents in Houston and the surrounding areas.
Safe Steps serves single-parent households, including single mothers, single fathers, and grandparents raising grandchildren, who:
Priority consideration may be given to applicants who are fleeing domestic or financial abuse, have recently experienced job loss or reduced income, those without alternative support systems, and participants actively working toward permanent housing or homeownership. The program does not discriminate based on race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, or family structure.
Participants may reside in transitional housing for 6–24 months, depending on need, progress, and availability. During this time, families receive comprehensive support focused on stability today and independence tomorrow.
